Maybe it went down like this...
Dr Carolyn Fern strode into the Asylum lobby, flanked by two of Arkham's finest. "What...?" exclaimed the porter on the desk, but Carolyn cut him off, presenting her ID badge. "I'm here to see a patient. Schedule me an appointment with Dr Mintz at once and let me in right now. We have a warrant if we need it...but I'm sure you won't stop me getting into my own offices. The fate of Arkham may well hang in the balance."
It had been a long investigation , starting with her patient exhibiting symptoms under her hypnotic therapy and medication that had turned out to just be the tip of the iceberg, with the epidemic of lunacy sweeping the city ever since that damned play had come to town. The horrors she'd seen up to this point had taxed every part of her considerable physical and mental talents.
The powers she had learned in the Dreamlands and her scientific equipment had got her this far, and she had prepared for what she might face in this madhouse overrun by its patients. She steeled herself and checked the equipment in her satchel and her father's old .45 as the doors to the inner wards swung slowly open, praying to whatever gods would listen that it would be enough...
Or maybe it went down like this...
The two cops escorted the bedraggled woman to the asylum desk, presenting their badges. "She was banging on the doors of the Historical Society, demanding to be let back in to tear up even more of their books, screaming about a play and secret societies. I know you lot have your hands full with what's been going on, but she was waving a gun around, and you don't want to know what we found in her bag. She's a danger to herself and others." The porter peered over his glasses, shock and pity mingling in his face. "Dr Fern? Is that you?" Seeing the confusion on the officers' faces, he went on, "Last I saw her, she was coming from a therapy session with a patient. Said she had to get to the bottom of this rash of cases. Guess instead, she's fallen victim to this epidemic. It's irregular to take her in here, since she used to work here, but we don't have much choice..."
Carolyn made her peace with their mistake; she knew from experience that trying to explain wouldn't help. They didn't understand like she did. They didn't see what she had seen. Maybe this was a blessing in disguise - now she was here she could talk to others who'd seen the play - yes, this was all part of her plan after all! But when the nurses came to sedate her, she lashed out with surprising strength and took off running. Maybe she was crazy. Maybe not. But she had the power to defeat those monsters, even if no-one else could see them. She'd save this town. She had to.
For the Drawn to the Flame competition, taking Carolyn Fern to The Unspeakable Oath. This deck should be relatively effective and fun to play, using Forbidden Knowledge and Peter Sylvester to get loads of resources and spending them to tackle whatever needs doing. Dynamite Blast, Ever Vigilant and Emergency Cache under Stick to the Plan. Moment of Respite is to get Foolishness up and running. 29 exp so should use 3x random weaknesses if played standalone.

Sep 07, 2018If you could pick your basic weaknesses, what would they be? |
Sep 07, 2018Good question! I think Drawing the Sign is obvious, as either way she's been exposed to the lore of Hastur - either she's obsessing over the clues she's found or she's infected by the madness of the King in Yellow. Paranoia is also pretty clear. I don't want an out-and-out mental illness like Psychosis because it's ambiguous whether she's still sane - but either she's paranoid that anyone could be infected, or she's paranoid that anyone could stop her doing what she needs to do. Finally, Overzealous. Regardless of which interpretation holds true, she's barrelling headlong into danger to do what she thinks is right. |
Wow, glad you submitted this! It's great!
