- Q: Hi! I have a question about the Robert Castaigne (4) card. Its text says: '...Then, you may either discard the revealed asset to draw 1 card, or play that asset (paying its cost).' By saying 'you may either,' does that mean I can choose to do neither option and simply keep the weapon in my hand? If so, that would allow me to gain a free combat action every turn without spending an action, without triggering attacks of opportunity, and with unlimited ammo. That seems overwhelmingly strong, almost broken, and it would make the 'discard the card' requirement nearly meaningless. However, some people in the community are interpreting it this way, so I’d like to confirm whether this was the intended ruling for the card or not. A: Given Robert Castaigne states you “may either” do one of the given options, not you “must either,” you are able to choose neither option and keep the revealed asset in your hand. If this card’s ability continuously yields unintended play patterns, we will address that at a future date; for now, play its ability as written. (Rules Forum Answer, March 2025)

Funny use: in a Tony Morgan deck, hold your Colts in hand as long as you don't need them. Once you do need them, use Robert Castaigne to shoot as a fast action and then play both for the price of a single one and without spending an action.
And the cherry on top is that if you had put a bounty from Bounty Contracts on that enemy and you killed it with this shot, you regain it and now have 6 bounties and 6 ammos.
Based on the FAQ of Unearth the Ancients, you could use Robert's ability to reveal a Firearm, then commit said Firearm during that same skill test, and then finally use the last part of Robert's ability to put that Firearm you just committed into play anyway.
I'd still recommend choosing neither option and just benefit from Robert's ability to make any (one-handed) weapon have infinite bullets, but a sweet option to keep in mind should the need arise, like when you need a boost in skill value or a lot of shots.
I believe using Robert to play a Remington Model 1858 will net you two free shots if you chose to play it. (I'm not entirely sure if it gets you a 2nd free shot if you discard it, as it hasn't 'entered play'?) In any case he's great for a Fist-based gun fighter rogue. (I'm guessing he was designed to be Michael McGlen's friend, but he seems quite helpful to Tony Morgan too.)
