Why We Are Taking the 2 Mental Trauma

Taking In the Thick of It [2] for 2 Mental Trauma looks scary on paper, but it is actually your most powerful opening move. Here is exactly why it is mandatory for this build: • You Can’t Heal a Healthy Mind: Carolyn’s Chapter 2 ability reads: "After you heal 1+ horror from an investigator or Ally, discover 1 clue at your location." If you start a scenario with 0 horror on yourself, your healing events (Private Practice, Psychoanalysis) are completely dead cards until the encounter deck decides to hurt you. • The Turn 1 Clue Trigger: By starting the game with 2 horror already placed on your investigator card, you are pre-damaged. On Turn 1, Action 1, you can immediately play a card like Private Practice or use your signature Tome to heal yourself. This guarantees you snatch a completely test-less, free clue on your very first turn without waiting for the Mythos phase. • Zero Sanity Risk: Carolyn boasts a massive baseline of 9 Sanity. Starting with 2 horror leaves you with 7 remaining sanity. Combined with your infinite self-healing tools, you are in absolutely no danger of being defeated by horror.

The Mulligan Strategy (Opening Hand)

When drawing your initial hand, hunt aggressively for your key setup pieces. • Hard Mulligan For: Dr. Milan Christopher and Experimental Psychology. Milan secures your infinite resource pool, and your signature Tome activates your core healing loop. • Keep If Seen: Dreamer's Chronicle, Occult Records, or Empirical Hypothesis. These cards quickly cycle your deck and establish early-game clue momentum. • Toss Everything Else: Toss all skills (Deduction, Guts) and expensive events (Psychoanalysis). You need your board engine down on Turn 1; you can draw into your skill support later once your engine is humming.

Managing Your Hand Slots (The Tome Shuffle)

You have three distinct Tomes in your deck (Experimental Psychology, Dreamer's Chronicle, and Occult Records), but only 2 Hand Slots.

  1. Early Game: Play Dreamer's Chronicle or Occult Records immediately. Use them to aggressively filter cards and find Milan.
  2. Mid Game: The moment you draw Experimental Psychology, play it. If your hand slots are full, you can legally choose to discard one of your older Tomes to make room. Your signature Tome takes absolute priority because it is your main avenue for testless clue acquisition.

Multiplayer Role Execution

• Stick to Your Fighter: Carolyn features an elite 5 baseline Intellect but a catastrophic 1 Combat. You are entirely defenseless against monsters. Your golden rule is to trail right behind or move alongside your group's main combatant. • Use Them as Sanity Sponges: Let your teammates step forward and tank encounter cards that inflict horror. Your entire economy and clue acceleration revolve around healing that horror back up. • The Healing-to-Clue Sequence: Once per round, when you use a card like Private Practice, De-Escalate, or Experimental Psychology to heal horror from a teammate, Carolyn's Chapter 2 ability fires, immediately handing you a completely free, testless clue right at your location.

The Campaign Start: In the Thick of It Setup

Before Scenario 1 begins, you take In the Thick of It. • The Cost: You suffer 2 Mental Trauma, leaving you with 2 horror tokens placed on Carolyn at the start of every game. • The Reward: You immediately earn 3 XP before the campaign kicks off. • The Purchase: You spend that 3 XP to buy 1x Studious.

The Perfected Studious-Start Upgrade Roadmap

Stage 1: The Initial Double-Upgrade (2 XP Total — After Scenario 1)

• Buy simultaneously: 1x Death • XIII (1 XP) and 1x Pathfinder (Level 1) (1 XP) • The Swap Strategy: • Cut 1x Shortcut → add 1x Death • XIII (Tarot Slot) • Cut 1x Shortcut → add 1x Pathfinder (Level 1) (Permanent Movement Asset) • Why this rules: Between your starting 6-card hand from Studious and your hard mulligan phase, you now have a massive probability of seeing both Death • XIII and Dr. Milan Christopher in your opening hand, giving you a baseline of 7 Intellect on Turn 1!

Stage 2: Clue Customizations (4 XP Total)

• Upgrade: Empirical Hypothesis (Fieldwork Customisation — 3 XP) — Spend evidence tokens to grab a second clue, completely bypassing your hand slots. • Upgrade: Empirical Hypothesis (Research Alternative Customisation — 1 XP) — Guarantees easy token generation in multiplayer on locations with 3+ shroud.

Stage 3: High-Tier Upgrades (10 XP Total)

• Swap: 2x Deduction (Level 0) → 2x Deduction (Level 2) (4 XP total) — Sweeps up 3 clues in a single investigation action. • Swap: 2x Psychoanalysis → 2x Psychoanalyst (Level 3) (6 XP total) — Turns your temporary healing events into a permanent on-board asset engine.

Stage 4: End-Game Luxury Pivot (6 XP Total)

• Buy: 1x Soul Sanctification (6 XP Permanent) — If the campaign goes long and you find you have excess XP, you can pick this up late to bank your late-game overhealing.
