OVERVIEW

An asset-light 9xp solo deck that seeks to make the most of Rita Young's incorporated movement and damage benefits.

INTRODUCTION

It would be perverse to build a deck for Rita that does not include Track Shoes. With her boosted to a reassuringly strong six, the additional movement benefit Track Shoes confers upon Rita enables numerous tactical options that are a boon in multi-player, and potentially game-saving in solo.

Track Shoes' interaction with Rita's ability means more often than not she should be well set to avoid taking hits. In fact, with no damage soak in the deck, you're rather counting on the fact that this will be the case. Treachery fail-related horror is another matter though, so Rita takes her Cherished Keepsake along just in case, recurred through Scrounge for Supplies if she is having a particularly torrid time of it

Card draw is driven by the Relic Hunter-enabled Rabbit's Foot, with bit-part contributions from Manual Dexterity, Guts, and Take Heart.

CLUEING IT, KILLING IT

Obviously, Rita does offer an additional challenge to the solo player when it comes to meeting the game's two principal requirements, namely clue acquisition and enemy management, so let's consider them next.

Clue acquisition is event-driven. "Look what I found!", Belly of the Beast, Breaking and Entering, and Eavesdrop provide plenty of options, with or without enemy engagement.

Fleet-footed Rita's innate damage dealing invites a hit-and-run approach to enemy management, chipping away at adversaries' health over a number of turns. Hatchet Man and Waylay have the potential to boost her damage-dealing capability, along with evasion effects triggered by other cards in the deck such as Cheap Shot, Slip Away, Survival Instinct, and Able Bodied. Lucky draws of may also help here.

WEAKNESSES

Clutching Guts for treachery tests that Rita does not want to fail is not really a strategy for handling the encounter deck, so careful piloting will be required.

Rita's three assets only cost four resources in total, so once they are down, economy can focus on paying for the low-cost events she will need to play. Take Heart can support this to some extent, but if you feel that Rabbit's Foot will provide enough draw consider swapping Take Heart out for Emergency Cache.

The deck runs Versatile on the basis that more of everything that Rita needs is good, with the potential irritation of making Track Shoes harder to find.

I completed a solo TFA campaign with Rita, I think if you build an XP deck with her, you are better off with Drawing Thin instead of e. g. Rabbit;s Foot, cause DT provides a choice whether you draw a card or gain gold and then it combines very well with Track Shoes. How do you deal with the Hoods? Not having any weapon is risky imho, because they punish for evasion... Also what is the benefit of Versatile in this deck?

Thank you for your thoughts. The interaction between Track Shoes and Drawing Thin has its appeal in a movement-focused deck such as this, but in a Taboo build paying 6XP for the privilege is less appealing. There is also the question of having to move when you do not want to, as mentioned on the Track Shoes page. Thanks also for the query concerning Hoods, which I really should have addressed above. For me, solo play emphasises the need to utilise health and sanity as resources in their own right, and in the case of Hoods I'd anticipate Rita taking one (using Waylay) or two (using Hatchet Man) damage. It should also be noted that Hoods' Alert keyword means these are tests she really does not want to fail, although at 7/3 with Track Shoes down she would usually only need to be one up against the standard bag, although I would definitely over-commit in scenarios where special tokens have a modifier of -5 or more. Versatile is in the deck to give Rita a little more of everything she likes, as well as access to Hatchet Man for the reason discussed in the accompanying text, although as noted it has the possible inconvenience of making Track Shoes harder to hit.
